BÁRBARA SÁNCHEZ-KANE
Designer
Mexico City, Mexico

Bárbara Sánchez-Kane is a Mexican designer, currently based in México City, with a degree in Fashion Design from Polimoda in Florence and a background in Industrial Engineering. In 2016 she participated in FASHIONCLASH Festival and received a special mention for her appearance. “I think it was in 2016 and my very good friend Alessandro Trincone won [the FASHIONCLASH Festival Award]. I was so happy for him. I remember being very close to Alessandro during the event and it’s a friendship still very close to me.”

Bárbara feels that FASHIONCLASH helped her build a collection from the start. “I remember when I applied [for FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016] I sent in a new collection called ‘citizen sanchez-kane’ which were just sketches at first. I didn’t know if I actually wanted to produce the pieces that I designed but when I got selected, it went all in production. It helped me understand the identity of the brand and to trust my process, being just out of school.”

Currently, Bárbara is the art and creative director of self-initiated brand ‘SÁNCHEZ-KANE world’, composed by a compound of objects that range from performance, clothing, installation, poetry, sculpture and absurd constellations. Her work is characterized by experimental tailoring fused with Latinx culture where creating an imagery of the Mexican uniform, pushing for gender equality through the breaking of dress codes and reaching from fantasy to reality is a central topic.

Her biggest achievement so far is that she has been able to keep pushing her own vision and to enjoy every part of it. Bárbara got opportunities to show her work at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, New York Fashion Week and during her first solo art show in Mexico city in 2019. “But meeting Björk at my studio in Mexico City and talking to her about the complete absurdity is definitively at the top of the list!”
