Taskforce Fashion - Fashion After Flood Pilot Presentation

On November 3rd, the interim results of the Taskforce Fashion - Fashion After Flood pilot where presented at the Jan van Eyck Academy. Narrated by Joost Horward, the presentation contained several speakers such as Hicham Khalidi (director Jan van Eyck Academy), Afke van Rijn (Director Media & Creative Industries at Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW)), Syb Groeneveld (Executive Director Creative Industries Fund NL), and the participating designers who during four months dove into the topic of Fashion After Flood.
The presentation featured performance by Toneelacademie Maastricht students Romy Moons and Olivier Herter.

Exhibtion
On November 3rd, the exhibition Taskforce Fashion - Fashion After Flood was opened to public. The three teams, all existing of five designers, presented their interim results in the exhibition.

What impact does the flood and status as a refugee have on the identity of Amsterdammers? Team Amsterdam of shows us how diversity and identity can be enriched by finding common ground. Al Mamoun Benmira, Lisa Konno, Gino Anthonisse, Lidewij van Twillert and Dewi Bekker, each pass their answer from a personal perspective to the next designer. It eventually merges into one story. How will the storyline deform, enrich and change visually as well as verbally from designer to designer?

Team Arnhem of shows us a world of people who stay behind, people who are living on land and all the new realities in between. The rising (sea) water level changes more than only a transformation in landscape. Discover through the eyes of Linda Valkeman, Jessica van Halteren, Karin Vlug, Rosanne van Wijk and Carmen Hogg how people form along his/her environment and naturally find a way to make it wearable and suitable - be it out of necessity as a second skin or as a new coat.

Team Maastricht
Christa van der Meer and Anouk van Klaveren from team Maastricht outsourced the problem of the flood to Prof. Sayon. They recently received this flyer from him, which promises to solve many of your problems, even the most desperate things. They visited this medium in The Hague to hand over the problem of the rising sea water level. With great respect, they present to you his confidence to bring about change.

If climate change continues at its current pace the sea level rise could create a future flood that would cover half the Netherlands. The flood will most likely cause mass migration from west to east due to the search for a safer haven while leaving behind a home. Taskforce Fashion - Fashion After Flood

The first pilot of Taskforce Fashion - Fashion after Flood was presented with an exhibition on 3 - 6 November at the Jan van Eyck Academy.

Taskforce Fashion initiators FASHIONCLASH, M-ODE and State of Fashion have challenged 15 Dutch fashion designers to reflect on a climate change reality and urgency: the rising sea level. If climate change continues at its current pace, Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam will disappear completely under water in the year 2300. By then, The Veluwe has become an island, giving refuge to Arnhem, Ede and Apeldoorn. Maastricht has become a hub for coastal towns such as Tilburg and Eindhoven. This future scenario - which received public attention earlier this year via Vrij Nederland - outlines a possible reality that requires not only imagination, but also solutions for new forms of society, business models and design practices.

Fashion After Flood
During the four months the designers researched the impact of their work, and used their knowledge, vision and expertise to investigate how fashion can be of value from this future perspective. 

From 3 until 6 November 2019 the research results and ideas of the Fashion After Flood pilot were presented at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. In a unique theatrical scenery, narrated by Joost Horward, audience experienced the speculative scenario of Fashion After Flood as a reality first-hand. While reflecting on the rising sea level due to climate change, our future is viewed through the eyes of the fifteen talents who collaboratively make a life with water tangible and visible to all. 



The Fashion After Flood fashion designers: Rosanne van Wijk, Karin Vlug, Christa van der Meer, Jessica van Halteren, Dewi Bekker, Carmen Hogg, Linda Valkeman, Vera de Pont, Yamuna Forzani, Almamoun Benmira, Gino Anthonisse, Lidewij van Twillert, Lisa Konno, Anouk van Klaveren and Anouk van de Sande.

The designers were guided in this by architect and urban developer Tim Prins, fashion industry expert Susanne Vegter and industrial designer and design thinker Tjeerd Veenhoven.

The interim results and ideas of the Fashion After Flood pilot are presented in the exhibition at the Jan van Eyck Academie. The exhibition was part of FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 and Jan van Eyck's Urgency Marathon.

NEDERLAND ~ In het bijzijn van het vakpubliek, de mode-industrie en de pers hebben de onafhankelijke platforms FASHIONCLASH (Maastricht), M-ODE (Amsterdam) en State of Fashion (Arnhem) tijdens WE MAKE M-ODE* het officiële startschot gegeven voor het initiatief Taskforce Fashion. Taskforce Fashion is een multidisciplinair samenwerkingsverband in opdracht van Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie waarin de drie platforms vanuit hun ondernemende, experimentele en innovatieve kracht in co-creatie met Nederlands ontwerptalent het bestaansrecht van mode - nu en in de toekomst - op (inter)actieve wijze onderzoeken. Taskforce Fashion wordt tevens mogelijk gemaakt met de steun van de gemeente Maastricht, de gemeente Arnhem, en het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.

“Het afgelopen decennium heeft de oproep tot transparantie, duurzaamheid, samenwerking en sociaal ondernemerschap via talrijke mode revoluties, #campagnes, ‘anti-fashion’ manifesten, klimaatconferenties en politieke debatten een onuitwisbare stem gekregen. Dat de mode van nu de mode van de toekomst niet kan zijn, staat meer dan ooit als een paal boven water. Het is tijd om op een andere wijze via mode verbinding, taal en waarde te creëren en het lichaam niet (alleen) als canvas maar als deel van een verhaal en doel te zien, waarbij gemeenschap en mens, boven status en onderscheid staan. Fashion After Flood

Taskforce Fashion stelt de ontwerper centraal en verkent via verschillende activiteiten welke rol mode kan spelen in het werken aan of het creëren van bewustzijn rondom maatschappelijke vraagstukken. De eerste gezamenlijke activiteit is Fashion After Flood, waarbij 15 mode-vormgevers via o.a. workshops en field trips uitgedaagd worden om zich te buigen over een actueel maatschappelijk vraagstuk: de stijgende (zee)waterspiegel. Als de klimaatverandering doorzet op haar huidige tempo zijn Amsterdam, Den Haag en Rotterdam anno 2300 volledig onder water verdwenen (zie scenario schets Dr. Kim Cohen - Universiteit Utrecht). De Veluwe is dan inmiddels een eiland geworden, waarop Arnhem, Ede en Apeldoorn ternauwernood een plek hebben. Maastricht is de uitvalsbasis geworden voor kustplaatsen als Tilburg en Eindhoven. Dit toekomstscenario - dat eerder dit jaar aandacht kreeg via Vrij Nederland - schetst een mogelijke realiteit die niet alleen om verbeeldingskracht vraagt, maar ook om oplossingsrichtingen voor nieuwe samenlevingsvormen, businessmodellen en ontwerppraktijken.

FASHIONCLASH, M-ODE en State of Fashion dagen de ontwerpers gedurende vier maanden uit om te reflecteren op de impact van hun werk, om hun kennis, visie en expertise in te zetten, en om vanuit dit toekomstperspectief te onderzoeken hoe mode van waarde kan zijn. In teams van vijf zoomen de ontwerpers in op drie steden in Nederland: Maastricht, Arnhem en Amsterdam. Vanuit diverse invalshoeken - als designer, als Nederlander en als mens - bekijken ze de toekomst van deze steden door de ogen van mode en ontwikkelen ze innovatieve ideeën en oplossingen die het denken over een toekomst met water accelereren.

“We willen designers en ideeën de ruimte geven om te kunnen reflecteren, ontdekken en experimenteren. Taskforce Fashion is dan ook geen eenmalige sprint naar de eerstvolgende catwalk, maar een marathon voor de toekomst van mode. Eén waarvan we de route, afstand, aantal hordes en eindbestemming nog niet weten. Alles is mogelijk en in beweging, niets staat vast.
