The Memory of Skin

Alessandro Santi and Brankica Sanadrovic together express alternative, collaborative, and sustainable approaches to fashion through different narratives, material experimentation, and the rejection of mass production. The presented project is the first collaboration between these fashion, costume, and set designers.
‘The Memory of Skin’ is a sculptural work through a site-specific installation. This project is rooted in collaboration and community co-creation through participatory body casting sessions with different individuals, where garments emerge from shared storytelling and collective authorship. Living materials like SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) were used to grow leather moulded on body casts. Microbial cultures were nurtured alongside human relationships, reflecting interdependence. Inspired by feminist and queer theory of Donna Haraway and José Esteban Muñoz, the work challenges dominant fashion systems by centering care and alternative kinship across human and non-human contributors.

Het gepresenteerde project is hun eerste samenwerking als mode-, kostuum- en decorontwerpers.
‘The Memory of Skin’ is een sculpturaal werk in de vorm van een site-specific installatie. Dit project is gebaseerd op samenwerking en gemeenschappelijke creatie, waarbij verschillende mensen meedoen aan sessies waarin lichaamsafdrukken worden gemaakt. Uit gedeelde verhalen en gezamenlijk eigenaarschap ontstaan zo kledingstukken. Voor het maken van het leer, dat gevormd is op de lichaamsafdrukken, werden levende materialen gebruikt. Microbieel leven werd gekoesterd naast menselijke relaties, wat de onderlinge afhankelijkheid benadrukt. Geïnspireerd door feministische en queer theorieën van Donna Haraway en José Esteban Muñoz, daagt dit werk de heersende modesystemen uit door zorg en alternatieve verbondenheid tussen mens en niet-mens centraal te stellen.
