CARLIJN VEURINK
Fashion Designer
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam based fashion designer Carlijn Veurink graduated in 2017 from ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem with a degree in Product Design. She kicked off her professional career right after graduating and participated in several editions of FASHIONCLASH Festival. “It gave me the possibility to show my collection live in front of an audience. FASHIONCLASH created a perfect place to experiment with different aspects of fashion. It would never have been possible to create a setting like this by myself.” Carlijn describes showing her first collection A | Scen | Dance in 2018 as a highlight of her career- so far. “My show started with a dance solo in one of my costumes. It was truly mesmerizing to see one of my costumes come to life like that.” Since then, she took part in the Clash House trajectory during the FASHIONCLASH Festival 2021.

Building on this exploration of movement and costume, FASHIONCLASH facilitated a collaboration in 2022 between Carlijn and the contemporary dance company Leine Roebana for the project Storm, where she contributed as costume designer.

Carlijn designs with a special eye for the construction of a garment, each piece perceived as a wearable invention; “With my costumes I blend fashion together with aspects of dance, theatre, music and spoken word. This results in autonomous and sculptural garments with a performative character. These garments move, stratify and transform while wearing them.” Recently Carlijn started creating more wearable pieces; “I started a new concept which launches collections as volumes. Each volume with their own design principles & construction but all with the same close attention to detail. (…) Usually my clothes are really over the top, now I am trying to see how I can integrate this extravagant style into daily life.

Nevertheless, Carlijn would like to have more collaborations with people in the performing arts in the future; “I would love to design costumes for dance and theatre [but] it would also be great if my sustainable label will have grown into an impactful brand - I dream about a fashion world which is more sustainable.”
