Enclothed Cognition is an ongoing collaboration project between Dutch fashion designer Bregje Cox (NOIR NEAR FUTURE) and Barbadian visual designer Mark King. They met in Brussels through a mutual friend-of-a-friend back in early 2011. Mark: “We started collaborating on editorial-style fashion shoots right away, with me photographing pieces from Bregje’s collections (…) We kept in touch after I returned to Barbados in the spring of that year, casually sharing what we were creating and thinking about, until it was the right time to collaborate on a new project. It wasn't until late 2015 that we started developing what would become Enclothed Cognition.”

The brands name and its work are inspired by the behavioral psychology theory of Enclothed Cognition; how a garment’s symbolic meaning, paired with the physical experience of wearing the garment, combines to impact the wearer’s performance in everyday tasks. Having a shared interest in science fiction, functional clothing, architecture, neuroscience and future technologies informs the brand. “We are currently learning how to work with 3D design programs, both for 3D printing and for 3D-printed garment design.

Bregje and Mark have set their goals for the future for Enclothed Cognition; “We want to continue to create a solid archive of wearable garments that are investment pieces - works of art. These are pieces that can be created as bespoke garments upon order. Next to the garments we would like to continue to develop events - Bregje and Mark developed a masterclass ON COLLABORATION for the Tate Exchange program. “It can be digital or analogue, though with a focus on creating meaningful exchanges with a like-minded community.”

The first collection of Enclothed Cognition was shown during FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2018. One of their designs was also part of the KOORKAPPEN Project in that same year.
