Matylda Krzykowski
Transdisciplinary designer and curator
Brussels, Belgium

Matylda Krzykowski is the embodiment of a transdisciplinary practitioner. She has an extensive academic background, having studied product design, conducted a post-academic research year around institutional and non-institutional display and being trained in graphic design and communications. Her experience as a trained dancer and her affinity for performance art and movement date back: Matylda was 10 years old when she hosted the summer party in her primary school.

Today her daily activities consist of designing, planning, writing and speaking about practices that make our physical and digital spaces. Often her work manifests itself in exhibitions, installations or presentations. Sometimes she uses performances and interventions to convey her art, in which she frequently uses video as an output and as documentary. Her modus operandi is characterized as strategic improvisation merging her familiarity of often static visual and usual dynamic performing arts. Matylda cares greatly about what she does in terms of methodology and seeks out the intrinsic properties of the work of fellow artists.

In collaboration with FASHIONCLASH, she invented ‘The Clash Project’ in 2009 and curated it until 2018, which she describes as: ‘Work for the body displayed on the catwalk.’ She remembers her time with FASHIONCLASH as: “Nourishing each other and testing possibilities from the early beginnings!”

She has described the highlight of her career as being co-founding and artistic directing Depot Basel, a temporary place for contemporary design. Matylda continues to be interested in finding an alternative context for the ongoing development and presentation of culture today. Besides showrooms, galleries, fairs and museums – what is an alternative stage for the 21st Century?
