TexTiles Maastricht Year

FASHIONCLASH Pop-up Atelier

The Pop-Up Atelier is an interactive workspace on the third floor of Centre Céramique in Maastricht. During the workshops, you will work with others on textile tiles, outfits, objects and creative experiments that will become part of the TexTiles project and related activities.

TexTiles

FASHIONCLASH is part of MaastrichtJaar with its participatory art project TexTiles. It is a project in which hundreds of Maastricht residents are working together to create a large-scale textile rug that will cover Plein 1992. The project brings the signing of the Maastricht Treaty on 7 February 1992 back to life – not as an abstract historical moment, but as a concrete source of inspiration for contemporary connection and cooperation.

Where diplomats signed a treaty on paper in 1992, hundreds of Maastricht residents are now weaving a “treaty” in textile. Each participant creates an individual textile tile measuring 40 x 40 cm – inspired by the dimensions of the tiles of Plein 1992 itself. Together, these hundreds of tiles form a collective work of art that reflects the diversity of contemporary Maastricht.

The project will run from January to June 2026 and is being realised in collaboration with Centre Céramique, Studio Europa, Quiet Community, art schools, Limburgs Museum, schools and other cultural and social organisations. The creative process will take place in the Pop-Up Atelier at Centre Céramique and through workshops in community centres.

Connections are created when newcomers and long-established Maastricht residents, young people and seniors, students and local residents literally sit down together at the work table. By working together towards a single visible goal, personal connections are formed that extend beyond the project itself.

The highlight is a Block Party at Plein 1992 – a contemporary neighbourhood party where the entire tapestry will be unveiled free of charge and open to the public, with a programme of performances, workshops and a picnic. TexTiles does not stop there: FASHIONCLASH has the ambition to further develop the project and possibly also show it at other locations in Europe.

Join the (free) workshops

During the workshops, you will work with textiles to create personal and collective creations. Everyone can participate – no experience is necessary. Make your own textile tile and add it to the TexTiles rug, a collective work of art in which all the tiles together form a polyphonic image of how the residents of Maastricht view Europe today: what concerns them, what stories they want to share, and what perspectives they find important.

Or design an outfit that brings your personal ideas and visions about Europe to life. These unique, wearable creations show in a playful and expressive way how you experience Europe, and together they form a colourful contribution to the larger TexTiles project.

Workshop I: TexTiles

In these workshops, you will make a 40 x 40 cm textile tile that will become part of the large rug for Plein 1992. Each tile symbolises a personal thought, opinion or vision about Europe. The aim is to make as many tiles as possible so that Plein 1992 can ultimately be covered as much as possible.

Workshop II: Outfits en objecten maken

In this workshop, you will create an outfit, flag or object inspired by your ideas about Europe. It is an opportunity to reflect on questions such as: What does Europe mean to you? What comes to mind when you think of Europe? What stories, emotions or ideas do you want to show?

Workshop dates: Sat 9 May | 11:00–16:30; Sun 17 May | 11:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Sun 31 May | 11:00–16:30;

Practical information

  • Materials: In all workshops, you will work with clothing and textiles that have been carefully collected at the Rd4 Textile Sorting Centre in Heerlen. The clothing and textiles have been discarded but are still in a usable, wearable (shop quality) condition.

  • Supervision: Each workshop is supervised by two workshop leaders with a background in fashion and textiles.

  • Participation: If you are participating for the first time, it is important that you arrive on time. There will be a short introduction at the beginning of the workshop. It is not mandatory to stay for the entire duration of the workshop; if you need to leave early due to other commitments, that is no problem.
