Exhibition: MOVING PORTRAITS at Centre Céramique

Fashion gives the opportunity to express yourself. Many artists use fashion to show the world their 'alter ego', to present themselves as a living work of art and to experiment with their appearance. What would you look like if you could decide that all by yourself? When there are no boundaries, no rules and no opinions of others?

In 2022, young people have collaborated to create a 'moving portrait' during a series of fashion and film workshops. The final result is a series consisting of seven ‘moving portraits’ (short films), shot at various locations in Maastricht. The fashion workshops were supervised by Mulas Hybrid House and the film workshops by Lotte Milder and Karlijn Milder from Studio AKATAK.

Between 15 April and 2 July 2023, you can visit the MOVING PORTRAITS exhibition on the third floor of Centre Céramique in Maastricht. The exhibition is part op the FASHIONCLASH Pop-Up Atelier, a temporary workspace where various activities related to fashion are organized. The exhibition can be visited (free) during the opening hours of Centre Céramique.

The exhibition can also be visited as part of Museumnacht Maastricht on Friday 14 April.

Premiere of MOVING PORTRAITS at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2022

During FASHIONCLASH Festival 2022, MOVING PORTRAITS premiered at Lumière Cinema. The event included a Talk with Karlijn & Lotte Milder of Studio AKATAK and MOVING PORTRAITS participants Gerald Derksen and Veronika Schoberer. The Talk was moderated by Chanel Trapman of Mumster. Additionally, there was an exhibition at Lumière Cinema showcasing the MOVING PORTRAITS on a smaller display.

MOVING PORTRAITS: Workshops

In the three-day workshop series of MOVING PORTRAITS, participants worked together on a moving portrait on film. The workshop series started with a joint masterclass on visual language, followed by separate workshops Fashion maker and Filmmaker, led by fashion label Mulas Hybrid Haus and film makers Lotte and Karlijn Milder from Studio AKATAK.

In de driedaagse workshop serie van MOVING PORTRAITS werkte deelnemers samen aan een bewegend portret op film. De workshop serie startte met een gezamenlijke masterclass over beeldtaal, gevolgd door aparte workshops Modemaker en Filmmaker, geleidt door het modelabel Mulas Hybrid Haus en film makers Lotte en Karlijn Milder van Studio AKATAK.

Doe mee aan de workshop serie MOVING PORTRAITS

Mode geeft de vrijheid om jezelf te uiten. Veel artiesten gebruiken mode om de wereld hun ‘alter ego’ te laten zien, zich te presenteren als levend kunstwerk en te experimenteren met hun uiterlijk. Hoe zou jij eruit zien als je dat helemaal zelf mag bepalen? Als er geen grenzen, geen regels en geen meningen van anderen zijn? 


In de driedaagse MOVING PORTRAITS workshop (zaterdag 4 juni + zondag 5 juni & zaterdag 11 of zondag 12 juni 2022) ga je aan de slag met het creëren van je eigen alter ego óf je gaat aan de slag met het maken van een ‘moving portrait’ op film. De workshop MOVING PORTRAITS start met een gezamenlijke masterclass over beeldtaal, gevolgd door de aparte workshops Modemaker en Filmmaker. De workshops zijn toegankelijk vanaf 15 jaar, voor maximaal 10 deelnemers per workshop. Let op: je kunt je aanmelden voor ofwel de workshop Modemaker of voor de workshop Filmmaker - voor beide workshops aanmelden is niet mogelijk.

Workshop Modemaker

In de workshop met modelabel Mulas Hybrid Haus, ontwerp je een concept voor je eigen ‘alter ego’ en werk je dit idee uit tot een volledige, eigenzinnige outfit. Tijdens de workshop werk je met hergebruikte materialen - je mag dus ook kleding meenemen uit je eigen kast (die je niet meer draagt en verknipt mogen worden) die onderdeel kunnen zijn van de outfit die je gaat maken. In het ontwerpproces is niets te gek, we dagen elkaar uit om out-of-the-box te denken en avant-garde outfits te creëren. Ervaring met het ontwerpen en maken van kleding is niet nodig, er zullen assistenten aanwezig zijn die je zullen helpen met o.a. het naaiwerk. Je werkt tijdens de workshop samen met een filmmaker uit de Filmmaker workshop, aan wie jij jouw ‘alter ego’ concept presenteert. De filmmaker zal jouw werkproces vastleggen en samen met jou een ‘moving portrait’ van het eindresultaat maken. Je speelt zelf de hoofdrol als jouw ‘alter ego’ in deze ‘moving portrait’.

Over Mulas Hybrid Haus
Het Nederlandse label Mulas Hybrid Haus van Jessica Van Halteren combineert de vloeibaarheid en verscheidenheid van het leven om een veranderd bewustzijn te creëren rond stereotypen en de extremen die de verkenning van persoonlijke identiteit kan produceren. Mulas Hybrid Haus legt de nadruk op de verhalen, tragedies en triomfen van haar klanten in haar kledingstukken, en ontwerpt haar collecties met de filosofie van het label - vooroplopend in de richting die mode inslaat. Mulas Hybrid Haus verlaat het concept om alleen nieuwe materialen en stoffen in te kopen en overbrugt het oude, het nieuwe en het extreme tot het ultieme hybride ontwerp.

Workshop Filmmaker

Als filmmaker krijg je een workshop van Lotte Milder en Karlijn Milder, zussen én regieduo AKATAK. Je krijgt tijdens de workshop de nodige technische en creatieve kneepjes van het vak mee. In de workshop werk je samen met één modemaker. In de film ga je een relatie leggen tussen het surrealistische concept van de modemaker en de dagelijkse realiteit, door de modemaker in de zelf ontworpen outfit vast te leggen op een bestaande, alledaagse locatie (bijvoorbeeld op een bankje in het park of op het schoolplein). De film wordt op deze manier een kijkje in het alledaagse leven, waarin fictie en werkelijkheid met elkaar in gesprek gaan.  Daarnaast leg je het werkproces van de modemaker vast in een minidocumentaire, vlog of een behind the scenes video en zorg je voor een knallend eindshot op film. 

Over AKATAK
Filmmakers Karlijn & Lotte vormen samen het regie duo AKATAK, waarbinnen ze werken aan eigen fictie films - maar ook voor opdrachtgevers binnen musea, theater, online content en commercials zoals FASHIONCLASH, Philips, Tommy Hilfiger, XITE, Libresse en museum Beeld & Geluid. Karlijn is regisseur en cameravrouw oftewel Director of Photography en is altijd opzoek naar de mooiste kadrering en shot en Lotte is naast regisseur een true storyteller die altijd bezig met het bedenken en opzetten van een sterk concept en verhaal. Daarnaast geven ze ‘Film & Edit’ les bij Reducations.

Eindresultaat

Het eindresultaat van beide workshops wordt een reeks MOVING PORTRAITS die worden samengevoegd tot een complete film. De film wordt vertoond tijdens FASHIONCLASH Festival 2022 (25-27 november).

Praktische informatie

De workshop MOVING PORTRAITS bestaat uit een Filmmaker workshop en een Modemaker workshop. Je kunt niet beide workshops volgen; je volgt de Filmmaker workshop óf de Modemaker workshop. In beide workshops wordt gewerkt met kleine groepjes van max. 10 deelnemers. Wees er daarom snel bij, want vol is vol! Deelname aan de workshops is gratis.

De workshops zijn verspreid over 2 weekenden. Het eerste weekend is een intensief weekend van 2 productieve dagen. In het tweede weekend vinden de filmopnames van de serie MOVING PORTRAITS plaats. De opnames nemen maximaal 3 uur in beslag. In het aanmeldformulier kun je je beschikbaarheid voor het tweede weekend opgeven.

De workshops in het eerste weekend vinden plaats bij The Masters, Hoogbrugstraat 42, 6221 CS Maastricht.

Op zaterdag en zondag 11 en 12 juni 2022 wordt er per groep (1 Filmmaker en 1 Modemaker) een film gemaakt. De Modemakers spelen zelf de hoofdrol als hun alter ego in de filmserie. Het filmen vindt plaats in verschillende tijdsloten van ongeveer 3 uur. Het tijdslot begint met 1 uur haar & visagie, gevolgd door max. 2 uur filmen incl. reizen van en naar de filmlocatie. Het filmen vindt plaats op verschillende (buiten)locaties in het centrum van Maastricht.

Let op: Indien je je wilt opgeven voor de workshop Filmmaker, is het handig dat je in het bezit bent van de volgende items:

  • Mobiele telefoon met camera óf een losse camera

  • Laptop

  • Als je zelf editing programma’s op je laptop hebt is dat een pré, zo niet dan bieden Filmmakers Karlijn & Lotte een aantal editing programma’s aan in de workshop die je gratis op je laptop kunt installeren.

Als je geen laptop, filmcamera of mobiele telefoon met camera hebt, aarzel dan niet om je aan te melden voor de workshop. Laat ons weten wat je wel of niet hebt in het aanvraagformulier, en we zullen zien wat we voor je kunnen doen.

Join the workshop series MOVING PORTRAITS

Fashion gives the freedom to express yourself. Many artists use fashion to show the world their alter ego, present themselves as living works of art and experiment with their appearance. What would you look like if you could decide for yourself? When there are no boundaries, no rules and no opinions of others?

In the three-day MOVING PORTRAITS workshop (Saturday 4 June + Sunday 5 June & Saturday 11 or Sunday 12 June 2022), you will work on creating your own alter ego or you will make a 'moving portrait' on film. The MOVING PORTRAITS workshop starts with a joint masterclass on visual language, followed by the separate workshops ‘Fashionmaker’ and ‘Filmmaker’. The workshops are accessible from age 15+, for a maximum of 10 participants per workshop. Note: You cannot attend both workshops; you either follow the ‘Filmmaker’ workshop or the ‘Fashionmaker’ workshop.

Workshop Fashionmaker

In the workshop with fashion label Mulas Hybrid Haus, you will design a concept for your own alter ego and develop this idea into a complete, unique outfit. During the workshop you will work with recycled materials - you can also bring clothes from your own closet (that you no longer wear and can be cut up) that can be part of the outfit you are going to make. Nothing is too crazy in the design process; we challenge each other to think outside the box and create avant-garde outfits. No experience with designing and making clothes is necessary, there will be assistants present who will help you with the sewing, among other things. During the workshop you will work together with a filmmaker from the Filmmaker workshop, to whom you will present your 'alter ego' concept. The filmmaker will record your working process and create a 'moving portrait' of the end result together with you.

You will play the leading role as your 'alter ego' in this 'moving' portrait'.

Workshop Filmmaker

As a filmmaker you will receive a workshop by Lotte Milder and Karlijn Milder, sisters and directing duo. During the workshop you will learn the necessary technical and creative tricks of the trade. In the workshop you will work together with one fashion maker. In the film you will establish a relationship between the surreal concept of the fashion maker and everyday reality, by capturing the fashion maker in the outfit they designed in an existing, everyday location (for example on a bench in the park or in the schoolyard). In this way, the film becomes a glimpse into everyday life, in which fiction and reality enter into a dialogue. In addition, you record the working process of the fashion maker in a mini-documentary, vlog or a behind the scenes video and you ensure a stunning final shot on film.

About AKATAK
Filmmakers Karlijn & Lotte together form the directorial duo AKATAK in which they work on their own fiction films - as well as for clients within museums, theatre, online content and commercials such as FASHIONCLASH, Philips, Tommy Hilfiger, XITE, Libresse and museum Beeld & Geluid. Karlijn is a director and a camerawoman or ‘Director of Photography’ and is always looking for the most beautiful frame and shot. Lotte is a director and a true storyteller who is always busy creating and building a strong concept and story. In addition, they teach 'Film & Edit' at Reductions.

End result

The end result of both workshops will be a series of MOVING PORTRAITS that will be edited into a complete film. The film will be screened during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2022 (25-27 November).

Practical information

The MOVING PORTRAITS workshop consists of a ‘Filmmaker’ workshop and a ‘Fashionmaker’ workshop. Both workshops will take place on Saturday and Sunday 4 and 5 June 2022. You cannot attend both workshops; you either follow the ‘Filmmaker’ workshop or the ‘Fashionmaker’ workshop. In both workshops we work with small groups of max. 10 participants. So be quick, because full is full! Participation in the workshops is free.

The workshops are spread over 2 weekends. The first weekend (4 & 5 June) is an intensive weekend of 2 productive days. The MOVING PORTRAITS series will be filmed in the second weekend. The recordings will take up to 3 hours. You can indicate your availability for the second weekend in the registration form.

The workshops in the first weekend will take place at The Masters, Hoogbrugstraat 42, 6221 CS Maastricht.

In the second weekend, on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 June 2022, a film will be made per group (1 Filmmaker and 1 Fashionmaker). The fashion makers themselves play the leading role as their alter ego in the film series. Filming takes place in different time slots of approximately 3 hours. The time slot starts with 1 hour of hair & make-up, followed by max. 2 hours of filming including traveling to and from the filming location. Filming will take place at various (outdoor) locations in the center of Maastricht.

Note: If you want to sign up for the Filmmaker workshop, it is convenient that you have the following items:

  • Mobile phone with camera or a separate film camera

  • Laptop

  • If you have editing programs on your laptop, that's an advantage, if not, AKATAK offers a number of editing programs in the workshop that you can install on your laptop for free. If you don’t have a laptop, a film camera or a mobile phone with a camera, please don’t be discouraged to sign up for the workshop. Just let us know what you have or don’t have in the application form, and we will see what we can do.
