La Monroy
Colossal Horizons. A festive Requiem for Pedro Antonio Cano.
La Monroy is a non binary Colombian immigrant based in Brazil, an artist, drag entity, academic, and researcher with a dancing tropical Andean heart. Their work integrates visual and live arts with the study of mass cultural phenomena to explore themes of migration, neocolonialism, and geopolitical power. Their recent works reclaim carnival and folk traditions as decolonial resistance tools.

A festive parade in memory of Pedro Antonio Cano. Our Lady of Holy Death, incarnated in La Monroy, invites everyone to join a colossal procession through Maastricht in memory of Pedro Antonio Cano, an Indigenous man from Nueva Granada, present day Colombia, who was taken to the Spanish Crown in 1792 as living “proof” of giants in the Americas. More than two centuries later, his mortal remains still on exhibition at the Museo de Anatomía Javier Puerta, Universidad Complutense de Madrid. From Café Zondag to Market Square and The Hub Hotel, Pedro returns as a colossal ancestral to be known and homage, not displayed. The procession celebrates his life and gathers signatures demanding the repatriation of his remains to Colombia.
