Fashion Makes Sense Talk
On Sunday, 16 November, the Fashion Makes Sense Talk, moderated by Carmen Hogg, brings together participating designers and artists to reflect on the festival’s participatory and co-creative projects.
PARTICIPANTS
Yala Claessens, director of the fashion film The Sneeze, will share insights into the creative process behind this project — developed during the FASHIONCLASH bootcamp in collaboration with Vera van Nuenen and Bent Lochtenberg. Together, they transformed a refreshingly humorous concept into a visually striking short film, blending fashion, performance, and cinematic storytelling.
Arva Bustin will discuss her newest collection Après Nous, exploring how her studio ULTRA ORA uses craft and co-creation to address social and political issues. For this project, she organised collaborative silkscreen workshops as part of a broader exploration of collective making.
Laisy de Andrade Rodrigues will reflect on the Afterparty workshops and the shared creative energy that shaped this interdisciplinary celebration.
Wievien Alberts, coordinator of the Pop-Up Atelier workshops for People Carry People (part of the Heiligdomsvaart Maastricht project), will discuss her experience on this community-based creation and collaboration.
Together, the speakers offer a multifaceted perspective on how creativity, participation, and social dialogue come together within Fashion Makes Sense — the heart of FASHIONCLASH’s socially engaged programme.
MODERATOR
Carmen Hogg (MSc.) is an Amsterdam-based style anthropologist, writer and curator working at the intersection of fashion, culture and community. Her work explores how people express identity through dress - from everyday street style to the emerging voices shaping global fashion. She researches and writes about street style and contemporary fashion from Africa, highlighting the creativity, craftsmanship and cultural narratives that define both. Through Showroom, the creative studio and shop she founded with Coco Olakunle, Carmen provides a European platform for designers from Africa and the diaspora - selling their work, curating events, and fostering connections between creative communities across continents. She also moderates talks and discussions, primarily around fashion and music, creating space for dialogue between industry figures, creatives and communities. Carmen has collaborated with organisations such as AKQA, ModeMuze and Museum van Wereldculturen; written for Dazed, Patta, OneWorld, Marie Claire and British i-D; and hosted and moderated talks for institutions including Sneakerness and LVRN.
