Seeing Black: Space is the Place

At S.A.C.59 a group exhibition featuring Seeing Black, Piet Paris and Dré Devens takes place, bringing together different perspectives across fashion, art and culture.

Seeing Black is an interdisciplinary physical and online platform that centres Afro diasporic stories through art, literature and dialogue. From South Limburg, Seeing Black creates space for Black artists and artists of colour, both locally, regionally and nationally, and brings them into contact with a broad audience. The platform focuses on the Black and POC community in the region, as well as anyone who wants to actively engage with these stories, perspectives and experiences. Through art, Seeing Black contributes to knowledge sharing and encounters, while creating space to question dominant perspectives and decolonise our thinking, with the aim of contributing to a more equal and inclusive society.

For FASHIONCLASH, Seeing Black presents Space is the Place, a multidisciplinary exhibition inspired by the ideas of Négritude and Jenn Nkiru’s short film Black Star: Rebirth Is Necessary. The exhibition explores how the white gaze has shaped our view of Black beauty, bodies and identity, but also how we can think beyond this gaze. The central question is not only what needs to change, but what kind of space do we want to create together?

‘Space is the Place’ brings together visual art, fashion, moving image, literature, dance and performance. Through these different disciplines, stories and ideas are not only told, but also physically and collectively experienced. The exhibition invites visitors to encounter new perspectives, question their own ways of seeing and imagine a future beyond existing dominant frameworks.

On Saturday 14 November, 12:00–14:00, Seeing Black presents a special programme exploring Black Star: Rebirth Is Necessary and the way the film inspires the exhibition. The programme continues with a performance by dance crew D&D and concludes with a Dutch language interview with Nsimba Valene Lontanga, creative consultant, founder of LIBAYA and author of ‘Meer dan Modemeisjes’.
