We are happy to announce that our project TexTiles is selected for Maastricht Jaar 2026
TexTiles is a participatory art project by FASHIONCLASH in which hundreds of residents of Maastricht collectively create a large-scale textile carpet that covers Plein 1992. The project brings the signing of the Maastricht Treaty on 7 February 1992 back to life—not as an abstract historical moment, but as a concrete source of inspiration for contemporary connection and collaboration.
Where diplomats signed a treaty on paper in 1992, hundreds of people from Maastricht now weave a “treaty” in textile. Each participant creates an individual textile tile measuring 40 x 40 cm, inspired by the dimensions of the paving stones of Plein 1992 itself. Together, these hundreds of tiles form a collective artwork that reflects the polyphonic character of present-day Maastricht.
The project runs from January to June 2026 and is realised in collaboration with, among others, Centre Céramique, Studio Europa, Quiet Community, art education programmes, the Limburgs Museum, schools, and other cultural and social organisations. The making process takes place in the Pop-Up Atelier at Centre Céramique and through workshops in community centres across the city.
Connection emerges as newcomers and long-established residents of Maastricht, young people and seniors, students and local neighbours quite literally sit together at the worktable. By working collectively towards one visible goal, personal connections are formed that extend far beyond the project itself.
The highlight of the project is a Block Party at Plein 1992: a contemporary neighbourhood celebration where the complete textile carpet is unveiled freely and publicly, accompanied by a programme of performances, workshops, and a picnic. TexTiles does not end there—FASHIONCLASH aims to further develop the project and potentially present it in other locations across Europe, allowing the stories of Maastricht to travel beyond the city.
