Anouk Beckers — SpeesBookLookPak
Step into the SpeesBookLookPak: a wearable publication and legible garment for the playful human of all time.
‘BookLook’ is a series of unfolding, wearable fashion publications that place clothing in a historical and social context. For this third edition, creator Anouk Beckers (1990) collaborates with artist Iris de Leeuw (1944), who designed the original Speespak in 1966.
The Speespak — a jacket and trousers with detachable trouser legs — was conceived in the 1960s as a ‘playsuit’ for Homo Ludens, the playful human of the future. By unzipping and exchanging trouser legs, the garment encouraged contact and interaction. It became a statement piece for activists and progressives.
The new SpeesBookLookPak brings the Speespak ’66 into the present. When unfolded, the publication becomes the pattern for the brand-new Speespak ’26. The trousers take readers on a journey through Dutch cultural history from 1966, guided by Rijksmuseum curator Harm Stevens. They explore the political, cultural, artistic and personal context in which the Speespak emerged as part of the Maastricht artist collective Luuks.
The jacket brings together conversations and correspondence between Iris and Anouk, offering an intergenerational perspective on activism and claiming space as artists and women.
The publication contains the patterns for both the new Speespak ’26 and the iconic Speespak ’66 — inviting us, through play, to imagine an alternative future.
