The First Potato

HILLZ aims to break the boundaries between work and luxury, social classes, and art and fashion. Starting from workwear, a form of clothing that symbolises the working class, heritage, and labour, he uses these recognisable symbols and translates them into high fashion. By reusing materials, shapes, and techniques, he wants to give value to what is often seen as ordinary or inferior, showing the strength and beauty that exist within.

‘The First Potato’ investigates family hierarchy through the ritual of sharing a meal. Every seat around the dinner table represents a different position within the family: who speaks first, who gets served first, and who holds the most authority. The potato becomes the symbol of this hierarchy. Made from discarded workwear, it connects these intimate family structures to HILLZ’s interest in labour, class, and status, while questioning how hierarchy is created, performed, and passed on.
