NNAEJ
Birthday Cake Destroyer
NNAEJ is a multidisciplinary artist questioning ideas around gender, beauty, identity, and self-expression. Taking inspiration from nightlife and queer underground culture, their work moves between fashion, performance, and installation. Experimenting with different materials, silhouettes, and the body is at the core of NNAEJ’s practice.
‘Birthday Cake Destroyer’ links together a selection of recent work by NNAEJ exploring the space between fashion, performance, and installation. At its centre is Fruitcake, a collection and performance developed in 2024 based on NNAEJ’s own journey of queer clubbing and inspired by shared experiences, drag, and performance. Based on the Amsterdam Fashion Week show in 2024, where a performer’s heel broke and they fell onto a slice of cake, this accidental moment is transformed into an intentional and humorous performance, where the performer and the cake become one through choreography, costume, and fashion design, questioning desire, identity, and self-commodification.
